Sunset Over Mt. of the Holy Cross - Mountain photography by Aaron Spong
This incredible view of the famous Mt. of the Holy Cross was taken at sunset from Notch Mountain on a calm early Summer evening near Minturn, Colorado. This is the same exact location that Henry Jackson took the first photograph of the mountain in 1873. The snow filled Cross Couloir gives the mountain it's name and has historically been a pilgrimage destination for religious groups. People would travel to the Holy Cross Wilderness and attempt to wash in the "Bowl of Tears" tarn below the cross, considering it a holy place to be healed. Today it is better known as one of the most beautiful and remote fourteen thousand foot mountains known as 14ers.
The clouds turned a beautiful pink color as the sun disappeared behind the horizon making for a truly breathtaking scene as I sat on the rocks. I knew it would be a long hike down back in the dark on the snow and talus to reach camp, but I was elated the whole trip back knowing I had witnessed a remarkably rare event that night.
